The NJ 6-Hour Program: What 16-Year-Olds Need to Know

New Jersey's Graduated Driver License (GDL) law is designed to save lives. For 16-year-olds, the first step is the mandatory 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel training. This isn't just a hurdle to clear—it's the foundation of your driving career.

What Happens During the 6 Hours?

We break our program down into three 2-hour sessions designed to build skills progressively:

    • Session 1: Fundamentals. We cover basic car controls, steering, braking, and navigating quiet residential intersections.
    • Session 2: Urban & Suburban Traffic. We move into slightly busier areas, focusing on lane changes, right-of-way rules, and scanning for hazards.
    • Session 3: Advanced Skills & Review. We practice parallel parking, K-turns, and introduce basic highway merging if the student is ready.

    The Permit Process

When you sign up with Adventure Driving School, we handle the permit validation for you. You must have passed your written knowledge test at school or at an MVC first. Once you complete your 6 hours, we take your permit to the MVC to get it "stamped" or validated, allowing you to practice with a supervising driver.

    Insurance Benefits

Completion of this program usually qualifies you for a "Driver Training" discount on your auto insurance, which can be significant for teen drivers.

Paterson Special: If you live or go to school in Paterson, you get this entire program for just $360. Call (201) 479-4768 to secure your spot!
