NJ MVC Road Test Checklist: Everything You Need to Bring

One of the most common reasons students fail their road test isn't their driving—it's their paperwork. If you show up missing a document or with an unapproved vehicle, the MVC will cancel your appointment immediately.

    The Document Checklist

Before you leave the house, verify you have the following original documents (no copies!):

    • Validated Permit: Ensure it is signed and has been held for the required amount of time (6 months for those under 21, 3 months for those over 21).
    • 6 Points of ID: You must meet the NJ MVC 6-point identification requirement.
    • Proof of Enrollment: If you are 16, you must have your certificate of completion from a 6-hour behind-the-wheel program.

    Vehicle Requirements

The car you bring to the test must meet strict safety standards:

    • Emergency Brake Access: The examiner must have access to a center-mounted foot brake or hand brake. If your car has a console that prevents the examiner from reaching the brake, it will be rejected.
    • Current Paperwork: Valid inspection sticker, valid registration, and valid insurance card for the vehicle.
    • Working Lights: All brake lights, turn signals, and headlights must function perfectly.
    • No Warning Lights: If your "Check Engine" or "ABS" light is on, the examiner may refuse to enter the vehicle.

    Decals for GDL Drivers

If you are under 21, you MUST have red reflective decals on both the front and back license plates. These are available at any MVC for $4.
